Even if prospective customers or employers don’t have an immediate need you can fulfill, by presenting a compelling value proposition you position yourself in their minds as someone beyond simple categorization.
You might be if you’re telling people how you deliver value instead of selling them on the value you deliver.
Many people confuse what they do with how they do it. For instance, they might define themselves by their service offerings, i.e., graphic design or website development, or a job title, such as director of public relations or personal trainer. By doing so they allow potential customers and employers to immediately categorize them with every other company or individual offering similar products, services, or skills and experience, missing the opportunity to set themselves apart and leave a lasting impression.
Unsure what your unique value is? Consider how working with you benefits your customers or employers. How are you different from other companies or individuals offering the same services, products, or skills, and why? The difference you make through the work you do is really what you do, and it’s the key to selling your value. Once you engage your prospective customers’ or employers’ interest, they’ll want to know the details of how and that’s where your products, services, or skills and experience come in.
Even if prospective customers or employers don’t have an immediate need you can fulfill, by presenting a compelling value proposition you position yourself in their minds as someone beyond categorization. You deliver a unique benefit that at some point may be the solution they require, which in their minds isn’t attached to the service industry or job category to which you belong, but to you or your company through your value proposition.
